Been enjoying the hell out of your PCT writings. This section of the trail is where I grew up and spent countless days camping and hiking. It’s been devastating seeing so much beautiful land get ‘moonscaped’ by these fires, and I can only imagine the drag it would be to have to hike through it all.
Every once in a while my dad and I like to post up at a water spring between Belden and Chester to hand out beers and sandos.
Thanks so much Brendan. What a place to grow up! It was heartbreaking, surreal and at times beautiful in its own way. There was a section in Oregon that can only be described as ‘scorched earth’ and nothing seemed to be growing back. There seemed to be a lot of conflicting ideas on controlled burns vs natural burns but what made sense to me is that fires are burning hotter than they used to due to the excess fuel on the ground. I’m hoping things improve one day and these places can still be enjoyed!
Ah that section was rough, I would have liked to bump into you then! Thanks for reading man.
